Sikh children learn to read without seeing themselves, their values or their language on the page
The idea
An AI-powered teaching app that generates Punjabi stories at the level each child is currently at, following how the Oxford Reading Tree breaks down phonics and the vocabulary that can be used in stories, but within a Sikh ethical framework. This goes well beyond asking a chatbot for a story. Every story is checked word by word against the child's level, any Gurbani it includes is verified against the source, and the app listens as the child reads aloud, catching every misread letter and mispronounced sound. All of this is hard in Gurmukhi, where language models still break spelling rules and speech models struggle with children's Punjabi.
